Friend of the Bride
Hold back the confetti, the rice and the noise
In the midst of this day with its pomp and its joys
The Bride needs a moment of silence because
Someone has followed on weary old paws.
Someone who followed her over the lawn,
Through childhood and girlhood and spring-times long gone.
Who scrambled the hillsides or splashed in the streams,
Who soothed all the bruises and dusted her dreams,
Has followed her now on old limbs that have slowed
To the end of the driveway, the fork in the road.
Hush for a moment, then lower your eyes……..
The Bride and her friend want to say their good-byes.

Prayer for Puppies
Maker of the animals,
We pray today for little pups.
We praise you that even their blindness
And whinings are ways of happiness in this world.
May they never be alone and cold
May their wishes for a friendly home be speedily fulfilled.
And spare them curiosity for fast-moving machines.
Help us to see in these spots on our rug
Little tokens of baptism into a new and special life
Shared only with a dog.
And teach us forgiveness
Through countless ruined shoes and other chewings.
In this fluffy gift, grant us glimpses of that inheritance
Reserved especially for the meek.
Gladden our hearts with the licks and wiggles of
Spontaneous love
And teach us the meaning of sniffs, scratches and
Wagging tails.
We lift this bit of life before you and ask you to
Deliver us now from ringworm, fleas and cats that
Won’t scare.
Amen.

A Bridge Called Love
It takes us back to brighter years,
To happier sunlit days
And to precious moments
That will be with us always.
And these fond recollections
Are treasured in the heart
To bring us always close to those
From whom we had to part.
There is a bridge of memories
From earth to Heaven above….
It keeps our dear ones near us
It’s the bridge that we call love.

Cat’s Prayer
Now I lay me down to sleep
I pray this cushy life to keep.
I pray for toys that look like mice
And sofa cushions, soft and nice.
For grocery bags where I can hide
Just like a tiger crouched inside!
I pray for gourmet kitty snacks
And someone nice to scratch my back,
For windowsills all warm and bright,
For shadows to explore at night.
I pray I’ll always stay real cool
And keep the secret feline rule
To NEVER tell a human that
The world is really ruled by cats!
