The Doctor's touch is soft and kind,
Compassion you have heard.
And though you wish for something more,
You finally give the word.
A dear sweet friend looks up at you.
For him life is a chore.
Confusion, pain are now his lot,
But you remember more.
He once was just a ball of fluff,
Who sat upon your lap.
And when you stopped to read a book,
Jumped up and had a nap.
And walks were always quite a trip,
So many stops were made.
But till the end he did enjoy.
He watered every blade.
But oh the years have not been kind,
The toll has been too great.
Wish somehow time could be reversed,
But know that it's too late.
The job's been done, its over now.
No suffering does he feel.
Your tears of sadness freely flow,
It will take time to heal.
You've made the hardest choice today,
To put your pet to sleep.
The good times, bad times all are yours,
They're memories to keep.
The Doctor's touch is soft and kind,
She understands your pain.
She leaves you for some time alone,
And with him you remain.
The baleful eyes look up at me,
I oft times wonder, what do they see.
The furrowed brow , the graying hair,
Or do they see how much I care.
This place, the smells, the sounds he hears,
In one so small must bring great fear.
A new adventure here to behold.
And now he's acting very bold.
No task too big, no place too dark.
He'll challenge all with his loud bark.
By sniffing, licking, with a chew,
He'll soon discover all that's new.
He's tired now time for a nap,
A furry ball snug in your lap.
Each day brings changes oh so fast.
This stage too soon we know will pass.
When those sad eyes look up at me.
There is no question what I see.
As I look down from up above,
I always see the puppies love.
