I Have A Love

As I walk along life’s lonely road
There is a love etched in my soul.
Love given by a heart that beats so strong
Held in a fur coat with a tail so long.
The very best friend I’ve ever had
Where humans have failed, he stands steadfast.
Life is a struggle for all of us here,
I feel such comfort to know he is near.
How blessed I am to have one by my side,
A trusted friend in whom I confide.
Who shares with me his entire being,
A master of hearts each day I’m seeing.
In our measure of time his life will be short
And I fear the day he’s called home to God’s Court.
The tear in my heart will be an open wound,
The loneliness I fear my soul will consume.
We share each other in a most special way,
The bond getting stronger with each passing day.
And so I am blessed with never a fear
For there is a love standing close, ever near.
The wag of his tail, the smile in his eyes
A reminder to me of how hard he tries
To make me happy, to share himself with me.
You see I have no doubts, not even a fear
For I have a love standing close, ever near.

I Remember, I’ll Never Forget

I took an old friend on his last car ride,
I held him so close right here by my side.
His years were so many and all spent with me
He was born in my house, my baby to be.
I remember his birth, his Moma so proud
Of this little pup that was squealing so loud.
I remember the pranks he pulled as a pup
And I remember the day I realized he’d grown up.
I remember how faithful he was just to me
And how each minute that passed the love he gave free.
The sparkle in his eyes when I returned home
And his tail tucked in shame when he had done wrong.
The racket he made to sound his alarm
When sounds he heard he thought would mean harm.
He’d sit by my side when company was there,
A warning he was, behave or beware!
I’ll never forget the comfort he gave me
When times were so rough no relief I could see.
I’ll never forget our last ride together,
I couldn’t see the road, no, it wasn’t the weather.
This old dog beside me my most faithful friend,
It’s for his sake, his pain I must end.
But I’ll remember our last day together
And each day before it for each one got better.
But I’ll never forget watching the light leave from his eyes
Or the last heartbeat felt as he sighed his last sigh.
I’ll never forget the pain I felt that day
As I laid him to rest, then alone went my way.

I See, I Hear, I Feel..

I see you out there scampering about,
I hear your bark as you chase birds and shout.
I see the mess you made at your bowl,
You  never had manners at the table, I know.
I see the hair you left on my chair.
I hear your growl to strangers, beware!
I see you begging for what's on my plate,
You begging to go out, "Please, Mom, I can't wait!"
I see all the tricks you used to display
When saying, "come on Mom, its time to play!"
I see you lying asleep at my feet,
I hear you snore in comfortable sleep.
I feel your coat so soft to the touch,
The warmth of your body as you snuggle up.
I feel your kiss so gentle and sweet,
The love you conveyed when our eyes would meet.
I open my eyes and reality is there,
You're no longer here for these things to share.
I feel the loneliness and pain in my heart
As I think of you here alone in the dark.
I won't let you go, you're here inside of me
A memory you gave to see when I please.
I feel the tears flow, I'm not ashamed to cry
For there in the ground is where my heart lies.
