Have You Ever Wondered?

Have you ever wondered why you do what you do?
Your new pup for instance you bought just for you.
Sounds so easy, just feed him and take him for walks,
Isn’t he cute, he tips his head when you talk.
Didn’t anyone tell you a pups full of energy?
The trials you’ll go through believe me are plenty!
You must puppy-proof your home for nothing is sacred.
If you think he can’t get it, believe me, he’ll make it!
You can plan on holes in your yard bigger than he is,
He’ll arrange you landscaping the way that he pleases.
When company is here and now you get this aroma,
Then you see him sneaking from behind the sofa!
Alright now that I have your attention,
There are a few other things that I need to mention.
Are you ready to fight fleas, worms, hair and the like?
Trips to the vet in the middle of the night?
Now are you wondering why you did what you did?
You sigh and you think, “he’s worse than a kid!”
He tips his head at you, wags his tail, licks your hand,
Your heart he holds captive this precious little man.
Even when naughty his antics are cute,
Its memories he’s making and all just for you.
He’ll grow up one day then you can relax
The rules of the house have now become facts.
You’ll think back and wonder, is this the same dog?
This one has manners, no trouble at all!
He’s faithful and loving tho’ sometimes still bold,
But to him you are “Mom” it’s your heart in his hold.
Now you know why you did what you did,
Miss one day of it?   Heaven forbid!!

My Old Friend

This old friend beside me is a wondrous thing,
A gift from Heaven where sweet angels sing.
My life has been full each day he’s been here.
To feel unloved, well it was never my fear.
He’s proved to me daily his place in my life,
Stood right beside me when life cut like a knife.
Couldn’t have a friend any better, you see,
Than this old dog cuddled close next to me.
Fifteen years of a good life we’ve shared,
Thanks to God from bad health we’ve both been spared.
I know that soon he’ll be goin’ on home,
Where in God’s house he’ll be free to roam.
He’s a good old dog, never messes the house,
Eats with manners and quiet as a mouse.
No pens in Heaven for an old gent like him,
Worth more than gold or any precious gem.
I feel real lucky to be the one chosen
To have this old dog, to God I’m beholdin’.
Not one lonely day have I known since he came,
Without him around, well it just wouldn’t be the same.
I think there’s a place built inside a man
That nothing can fill like a good old dog can.
We’ve hunted, gone fishin’ or just lazed around,
Can’t measure the comfort from this old hound.
Can’t count the times he’s protected me
From things in the night that I couldn’t see.
I know its not long till he’ll have to go,
His coat has turned gray with age that he shows.
I’ll lay him to rest under his favorite tree,
Right close to my window, not far from me.
For now I’ll store each precious day,
He’s here with me now, Lord I wish he could stay.
I pray you will love him as much as I do,
Until I come get him please keep him with you.
I’ll be there directly, I’ll listen for his bay
To guide my steps so I don’t lose my way.
No tears in Heaven, the words come from you,
It eases my heart cause you only speak truth.
So I’m trustin’ you Lord, to let him come in,
I’ll be there soon, I’ll come get him then.
You’ve made your promise now I’ve made mine to
And I’m thankin’ you Lord for a dog like Ol’ Blue.
